Seed agrees that video games make you smarter ;-)

Remember what we were saying at How the Dark Knight, cartoons and video games make you smarter and what this has to do with the Flynn effect and More proof that video games make you smart :) ?The above links will take you to two Seed Magazine articles that deal pretty much with the same issue.

The first article concerns Spore. It is a video game by Electronic Arts that holds the title of the first evolution simulation game. You start with a simple organism which evolves and then starts its journey through the galaxies as centuries pass by. In the game there are other races of creatures which you can meet, however, none of them are premade. Instead, the programming team hired scientists in order to get this as close to reality as possible. They based the game upon a few basic principles which create a system that evolves on its own. This is pretty much the foundation of complex systems and it also pretty much resembles the real universe.

The second article deals with how video games can help science and scientists. It offers some examples of games I didn’t know. They mention Foldit, a video game where the players must fold proteins, Immune Attack, which aids freshmen to learn immunology and 3D Virtual Creature Evolution, which is a game pretty somewhat like Spore, as it simulates the evolution of virtual creatures.

The future of training in biology :-P

So it seems, that the opinion I expressed in How the Dark Knight, cartoons and video games make you smarter and what this has to do with the Flynn effect and More proof that videogames make you smart :) really has some basis. Video games can have many applications and the most important of all: they are fun! After all, our brains are not evolved to read books for countless hours. It is pretty obvious that we can retain information much better when we combine our senses. Books simply work on the visual level. And not only that, but in an abstraction of our basic visual functions that utilise symbols (letters that is), a reason that learning to read can be so difficult for a small child. On the other hand, video games work on both the visual and auditory level, including not only symbolic abstractions (like books), but also motion. And since they are entertaining, our brains can do much better withholding the information they provide. So, let’s just hope that we’ll see more of them coming ;-)
